In Montella,
Italy, atop a beautiful breath taking mountain of green foilage
sits a church hand built by the people of the town. It is our
sister church, Holy Saviour. The long winding road to the top
shows some of the most magificent views of the little town and
its surroundings. In the middle of your elevated journey, you
are greeted by the San Salvatore himself in the form of a beautiful
statue, one that is most familiar to us even here in America.
As you arrive on top, you are placed at the bottom of a set of
marble steps that lead to the top courtyard of the church. Each
step is engraved with the name of a person who donated money
in remembrance of a loved one. The names, again, are all too
familiar to us here in Norristown, such as Gambone, Salamone,
Bocella, Carfagno, Santangelo etc., etc. As you climb to the
top of the stairs an overwhelming view of the church hits you
accompanied by the small town of Montella nestled in the background
down below.
Straight and to the right is the Bell Tower. Beyond that, the
"miracle well" and lastly the entrance to the church.
Inside, a somewhat antiquated version of our church here in Norristown.
The similarities are absurd. It is quite a humbling experience
to stand in the same foyer that our parents and grandparents
have in the past. The inside of the church is magnificent. To
the left and right, raw candles for votive offerings and special
intentions. Ahead, the marvelous original of the San Salvatore
statue sits above the altar same as it does in our place of worship.
